Vercel


Vercel is a cloud platform for building, deploying, and scaling modern web frontends—especially sites and apps built with frameworks like Next.js (which Vercel created), React, SvelteKit, and Nuxt. It automates CI/CD from your Git repo, gives each pull request a shareable preview URL, and serves production builds from a global edge network for low latency. Developers can add serverless/edge functions, schedule jobs, manage environment variables and secrets, handle image optimization, and monitor performance with built-in analytics—all without managing servers.

A typical Vercel flow

Set up Vercel by signing up and importing your Git repository (GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket) into a new Vercel project. You don’t start any servers yourself.

On every git push, Vercel detects the new commit and kicks off CI/CD automatically. 

It builds your app using the framework it auto-detects (e.g., Next.js → pnpm|yarn|npm install + next build). Vercel infers your setup from files in the repo and (optionally) your Project Settings:

  • Framework / build tool: looks for signatures like package.json + scripts (build, dev), next.config.*, astro.config.*, vite.config.*, nuxt.config.*, etc. If it can’t confidently detect, you can pick a framework or set Build Command and Output Directory manually.

  • Monorepos: you set the Root Directory (e.g., apps/web), and it detects from there.

  • Serverless runtimes: presence of an api/ directory signals Serverless/Edge Functions. For Python, a top level requirements.txt (or pyproject.toml) plus api/*.py is detected; Vercel installs your Python deps and packages each api/*.py file as an endpoint.

  • Not Maven: Java/Maven isn’t the common path on Vercel.

  • Vercel is great for hosting both pure static frontends (static SPA/SSG) and SSR/Edge frameworks (Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, Astro). It will:

    • Detect your framework and run your Build Command (e.g., npm ci && npm run build).

    • Publish your Output Directory (e.g., dist/) to a global edge network with HTTPS and preview URLs per commit/PR.

    • Optionally run API routes (serverless/edge functions in an api/ folder) alongside your UI.

Each build creates a shareable Preview URL that shows the full, running site (not just a page), plus logs so teammates can review before release. When you merge to your production branch, Vercel promotes that build to a Production Deployment on the global edge, with your custom domain and SSL handled for you. At any time you can manage environment variables and secrets in the dashboard (or vercel.json), and they apply per-environment (Preview vs Production) without code changes.

When your repo is connected to Vercel, each git push (to a tracked branch) triggers a build and creates a Preview Deployment with its own unique, immutable URL. That URL represents the exact code/artifacts from that commit. Push again → you get another deployment → another URL. So, different URLs correspond to different deployment versions.

For Production, you usually designate a branch (e.g., main). When you merge there and the build succeeds, Vercel promotes that specific deployment by aliasing your production domain(s) to it (e.g., www.example.com). The production domain stays the same, but what it points to changes to the new deployment. You can keep as many preview URLs as you like for past commits, and you can roll back production instantly by re-aliasing an older deployment. Environment variables are scoped by environment (Preview vs Production), so preview URLs use preview vars, and your production domain uses production vars. no code changes needed.

If you need backend logic, you add functions as Serverless/Edge Functions (e.g., a Next.js /api/products file) and call them from your frontend. No server management required.

For periodic tasks, you schedule jobs with Vercel Cron: define a schedule (e.g., every hour) to hit a specific function URL—for example, /api/rebuild-sitemap to refresh your sitemap. 

Image optimization is built in (e.g., Next.js <Image> or Vercel Images) so requests are resized, compressed, and cached at the edge automatically. “Image optimization” here means optimizing picture assets (JPG/PNG/WebP/AVIF/SVG) that your UI shows to users. When a page requests an image via <Image> (or Vercel Images), the platform resizes to requested dimensions, compresses (often WebP/AVIF when supported), and serves it with proper cache headers; the first request does the work, then the optimized result is cached at the edge for fast repeats. It’s responsive by default (emits srcset/sizes so devices download the smallest acceptable file). You can also optimize remote images by whitelisting their host (e.g., images.example.com).

For visibility, enable Analytics (traffic, pages, referrers), Speed Insights (Core Web Vitals), and inspect function logs. 1) Web Analytics: shows pageviews/visits for your site. That’s the usual “requests” people mean (how many times pages were viewed). 2) Usage & Functions: shows edge requests/bandwidth and function invocations (closer to raw HTTP request counts for CDN and APIs).

You can wire notifications for failed builds or checks to email/Slack. 

Instant rollbacks to any previous deployment, per-PR preview comments, access controls for previews, and protection rules on production. This is the “happy path” that keeps the example short, but it covers the essential steps and clarifies the parts you marked as TODOs

core strength

Vercel’s core strength is hosting the frontend (UI) and everything directly around it—builds, preview URLs, global CDN/edge, and lightweight backend logic (serverless/edge functions). Plenty of teams run only the UI on Vercel and keep heavier backend services elsewhere. Both patterns are common.

Its AI offerings (AI SDK, AI Gateway, Vercel Agent) are add-ons that make it easier to integrate AI into apps you host on Vercel, but they’re not the core reason the platform exists.

AI SDK

It’s an open-source TypeScript toolkit for adding AI features to your web app (Next.js/React, Vue, Svelte, Node). It gives you a unified API to call models (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), streaming responses, tool/function calling, structured (type-safe) outputs, multi-turn chat state, and handy UI primitives for building chat, RAG, and “agentic” workflows. You can pair it with Vercel’s AI Gateway (optional) for routing, keys, usage analytics, and caching.

Does it “write programs” for you?
Not by itself. The AI SDK doesn’t write your app's code; you still write your application code. Think of it as infrastructure that makes using AI inside your app straightforward e.g., a chat endpoint, a RAG route, a function-calling agent, or a streaming UI rather than a tool that replaces coding.

AI Gateway (Vercel’s)

It’s a proxy layer between your app and multiple AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.). You send requests to the gateway; it forwards them to the right model and gives you control and visibility.

What it does (in short):

  • Key & access control: keep provider API keys server-side; your app talks to one endpoint.

  • Routing & failover: route by model/env, and fall back if a provider is down.

  • Observability & cost: dashboards for latency, success rates, token usage, and spend.

  • Caching: reuse identical responses to cut latency and cost.

  • Rate limits & policies: throttle, quotas, and environment-specific rules.

  • Edge performance: run close to users for lower latency.

Vercel Agent

Vercel Agent is Vercel’s AI powered code review agent that runs on your repositories and pull requests. It analyzes diffs, reproduces issues in secure sandboxes, proposes fixes, validates them, and lets you apply changes. Aimed at speeding up reviews and reducing back and forth. It’s currently in Public Beta for Pro and Enterprise teams.

How it works (at a glance)

  • PR analysis: reads your PR diff and related files to produce review comments and summaries. 

  • Validate & suggest fixes: attempts to reproduce problems in sandboxes, then generates and verifies patches before suggesting them.

  • Automatic reviews: once enabled for a team, it can review PRs across connected repos by default.
